How to Get a Baby to Stop Crying

By: Lexington, NC Newborn Baby Photography Specialist, Heather Hedrick Portrait Photographer

Ever wonder how Newborn Photographers achieve all of those sweet sleeping newborn baby pictures?  Learn the Secrets to soothe your baby and help them stop crying in this article.

You’ve read all the best baby books, parenting magazine articles, and taken the caring for baby classes.. You’ve changed baby’s diaper, fed, and burped baby and you still can’t seem to calm your crying newborn baby.  Yet, newborn photographer’s websites are filled with sweet, sleeping newborn pictures. So, just how do they do it and can their secrets work for you?

As a newborn photographer, I have cared for many crying babies in my Lexington, NC photography studio.  Many of my clients have watched in awe as I lovingly soothed and comforted their fussy baby into the tranquil deep sleep I need them to be in to achieve those beautiful sleeping baby pictures.  In fact, many of my clients have referred to me as the baby whisperer! What they didn’t know is, they too can be a baby whisperer. I’ll tell you how below, just as I show them how at every session:

So here are 5 of my tried and true methods to stop a crying baby:

(After changing baby’s diaper, feeding baby, and burping baby)

Swaddle Baby

Why it works?

Your baby has been safely nestled in the womb for 9 months.  Swaddling replicates the comfort baby experienced in the womb and induces calming.  It decreases startling and increases sleep.

Tip: I like to swaddle baby in my lap, by sitting on the floor with my legs straight together and in front of me.  This will help baby stay snug and cocooned while swaddling.

Click here: to Learn How to Perfectly Swaddle a Baby.

Note: Babies shouldn’t be swaddled all day, just during fussing and sleep. Monitor baby to make sure baby doesn’t overheat, and never cover your baby’s head or allow unraveling.

Pacifier

Why it works?

Most babies are born with a strong sucking reflex and are comforted by sucking.  Some babies even suck on finger and and thumbs while in the womb.

Hold Baby in a Side Lying Position

Why it works?

Holding baby with their head rested on the crook of your arm and turned stomach to stomach with you replicates a natural nursing position and is a comfort position for babies.

Note: Never put baby down to sleep on it’s side or stomach.  Babies should always be put to sleep on their backs to reduce the risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome)

Sway With Baby

Why it works?

While in utero baby is constantly moving and jiggling as you move.  They are used to being lulled to sleep by the constant movement of your daily routine.  After swaddling the baby nice and snug and holding them in a side lying position, gently sway back and forth with baby or gently jiggle your arms up and down.

Note: Never shake, sway, or jiggle baby forcefully or violently.  Simply replicate the movement created by walking or pat baby’s bottom to jiggle baby.

White Background Noise

Why it works?

The human body is very noisy inside.  For 9 months your baby has heard the constant grumbling, gurgles, and swooshing sounds your body makes.  In the womb the sound of the blood flow is almost as loud as a vacuum cleaner.  That is why some babies fall asleep to the noise of a vacuum or hair dryer.  Plus, baby’s hearing is not fully developed yet as a newborn, so the noise is not quite as loud to them as it is to you and me. I like to loudly repeat Shhhhhhh as I sway baby back and forth.  I once photographed an entire newborn session with a running vacuum to keep the baby asleep.

Tip:  The background noise doesn’t have to be white static noise.  My daughter would calm to the sound of the All American Rejects.  Lucky for me, it was music I enjoyed too.  Try some of your favorite music.  They may even recognize the music if it’s something you listened and sang often while you were pregnant.

How to prepare for Maternity Pictures – Maternity Photography – Winston Salem Greensboro High Point NC – Lexington Baby Photographer

How to Prepare for Maternity Pictures:

4 Tips for a Beautiful Maternity Portrait

By: Lexington, NC Maternity Portrait Specialist, Heather Hedrick

  • Book Early – Be sure to book your maternity session early.

I recommend photographing mother’s to be around 28 weeks gestation.

At 28 weeks you should already have a beautiful baby bump. Your belly will be ready for those glowing maternity portraits, while you still feel your best.

During your third trimester, your body is working hard to prepare for your baby’s debut and your baby is starting to gain weight more rapidly.  Pretty soon baby is going to start running out of room in your tummy. Which can make some mom’s to be hot & uncomfortable. You are also more likely to experience edema (swelling in the face, hands, feet, and ankles), Chloasma (pregnancy mask: redness or dark spots on the face), shortness of breath, and you can become easily fatigued.

By holding your session at 28 weeks, you will be more comfortable while posing and you will ensure you don’t miss out on documenting this beautiful moment.  After 34 weeks, some doctor’s will not stop your labor.  In fact, they will help you welcome baby early!

  • Make an appointment at the Salon – Pamper yourself mama, you deserve it!

Steal an afternoon away for yourself and get your nails and hair done.  It may be a while before you have the luxury of a salon experience again. Plus, you’ll make sure your hair looks it’s best for your portraits! While you’re there get a manicure and pedicure, to make sure your hands look beautiful, feminine, and polished for those up close belly shots.  Your hands may not be the star of the portrait, but they will sure play an important role in displaying your love for your baby in your portraits.

  • Go Shopping – Find the perfect outfit for your maternity portrait

I love simple flowing maxi dresses, they accentuate every body type and look elegant on expecting mothers

Choose soft, delicate solid colors for an extra feminine touch.  Solids are timeless and often more visually pleasing than stripes and patterns.

An extra feminine lace bra and panty set, paired with one of your partner’s over sized button down shirts can create a special portrait for you to share with your partner.

Be sure to check out my pinterest page for maternity clothing examples.

Pinterest
  • Find YOUR Photographer – Find a photographer that creates portraits you are drawn to.

Take your time to find a photographer who’s work you love and make sure they are someone you’re comfortable working with.

Interview a few photographers first before booking a session.  Talk to them to make sure you’re a good team.  You want to make sure that you share the same vision and they have your best interests in mind.  Ask if they include a complimentary portrait planning session, and guarantee the success of your session.

How comfortable your photographer makes you feel, will make the difference between an okay portrait and a portrait that you will love and cherish.

How to Perfectly Swaddle a Baby – newborn baby Photography – Winston Salem Greensboro High Point NC | Lexington Baby Photographer

How to Perfectly Swaddle a Baby

By: Lexington NC Newborn Baby Photography Specialist, Heather Hedrick Portrait Photographer

Not only does swaddling a newborn create such cute baby pictures, but swaddling is one of the most effective ways to calm and comfort a fussy newborn baby.  That is why it is one of the most go to poses and common techniques used in newborn photography.

Tip: I like to swaddle baby in my lap, by sitting on the floor with my legs straight together in front of me, in a pike formation.  This will help baby stay snug and cocooned while swaddling.

Use a light weight receiving blanket and lay it on your lap so it is in the shape of diamond.  The bottom corner of the blanket should be pointing towards your belly button.

Fold the blanket in half to make a triangle. Fold the top down towards your belly button. Slide the blanket about 5″ down from the top of your knees on your thighs.  Let the excess fabric gather at your waist.

Place baby on top of the blanket, with their shoulders just above the fold you just made.  Their neck and head should not be touching the blanket.
Bring their hands together in front of their body, fold their arms up at the elbows and lay their arms across their chest to one side. Hold the arms gently but firmly in place with your left hand. NEVER FORCE BABY INTO AN UNCOMFORTABLE POSITION.
Grab the right top corner of the swaddle and pull it snug across baby’s left shoulder, arms, chest, and torso.  Tuck the corner deep behind their right shoulder. You may need to apply gentle pressure to keep the babies arms and blanket secure.
Grab baby’s feet and gently help them bend their knees and bring them up towards their belly.  NEVER FORCE BABY INTO AN UNCOMFORTABLE POSITION.

Grab the bottom corner of the swaddle and bring it up and over baby’s legs and across the first pass of the swaddle.  Tuck the corner under the first pass of the swaddle.

Slowly bring your legs up by bending your knees and sliding your feet towards you.  This will help keep baby’s legs in place.
Grab the remaining corner of the swaddle, pull it snug, and tuck it behind baby’s left shoulder.

Tip: I love aden and anais muslin swaddles.  They are lightweight, super soft, and you can get them in extra large sizes.  Which comes is needed when you have 9 lbs babies like I did!  Check out their online store and their step by step tutorial for swaddling a baby.

Bonus Tip: My favorite swaddle is made from Jersey Knit.  You can find this at your local fabric store.  Get 1 yard and cut in half for 2 swaddles.  The extra stretch it has helps keep baby nice and snug.  Just be careful to never swaddle too tight.  You never want to cut off baby’s blood supply or airways.

Note: Babies shouldn’t be swaddled all day, just during fussing and sleep. Monitor baby to make sure baby doesn’t overheat, and never cover your baby’s head or allow unraveling.

Ava’s One Year Old Pictures

Happy Birthday Ava!

Lexington NC Baby & Child Photographer

Beautiful Ava came to my Lexington, NC home studio for her First Birthday Pictures and she was an absolute doll to photograph!  I also had the incredible honor of photographing her when she was 2 months old, and she gets prettier every time I see her!

We had a blast playing together.  Especially when we did monkey see, monkey do and she imitated exactly what I did.  She was so tickled with herself by being able to follow directions and do new things!  Through these games and taking the time to let Ava get acquainted with me and feel comfortable in her new surroundings, I had no trouble getting her sweet personality to shine through!  Happy Birthday Sweet Girl!

Two Year Old Pictures

Happy Birthday Andrew!

By: Lexington, NC Baby & Child Portrait Specialist, Heather Hedrick

This week my baby boy turns two.  It’s so hard to believe, that it was two years ago that we welcomed this sweet boy into our lives.  It doesn’t seem like the years have flown by that quickly.

2 years ago he fit so perfectly into the crook of my arm. Today, his little arms fit so perfectly around my neck when he hugs me tight.

2 years ago he loved to be rocked back and forth in his infant swing.  Today, he loves to ride back and forth on the tractor.

2 years ago he couldn’t say a word.  Today, he calls me Mommy.

Happy Birthday, my sweet Andrew!

Cherish every moment and take lots of pictures!  For today they will leave a little bit of baby behind, and gain a little bit of big kid tomorrow.

Welcome Baby Maebry!

Archdale NC Newborn Baby Photographer

Sweet baby Maebry was 3 weeks old when she came to my Lexington, NC photography studio.  She arrived sound asleep from her short drive from Archdale, NC and continued to snooze while her Mother and I chatted briefly about the colors and headbands I pulled for Maebry’s session.

During the complimentary portrait planning consultation, I asked Maebry’s mother to tell me about the nursery, so I could create beautiful portraits of Maebry that were designed specifically for her nursery.   Her mother enthusiastically shared pictures of Maebry’s navy and coral colored nursery with me and instantly I knew the perfect wraps and headbands to use. Doesn’t she look gorgeous in coral and navy?  And that black and white photo with her sweet wispy hair, LOVE!

I hope you enjoy these sweet portraits of Miss Maebry!

Saywer’s One Year Old Pictures

Happy Birthday Sawyer!

Winston-Salem NC Baby Photographer

First Birthday Session

It’s so hard to believe this little guy is ONE!  I took Sawyer’s newborn pictures when he was a week old and I had the honor of photographing him again for his first birthday!  Sawyer and his parents came to my Lexington, NC photography studio from Winston-Salem, NC, where we played peek-a-boo, sang songs, and laughed during his session.

I was on cloud 9 when his mother told me how much she appreciated the time I took in perfecting details and posing their family to look their best!  She said it made a huge difference in how she felt when she looked at their first family portraits after giving birth to an almost 9lb. baby and that is why they booked me again for Sawyer’s One Year Old pictures and plan to create a gallery wall with his portraits.

That is such an incredible compliment to a portrait photographer!

It is my job, as your photographer, to make sure everyone looks their best!  I have studied and worked hard to perfect my posing to flatter women of all shapes and sizes, so they will want to be in pictures with their children.  I have learned to play games with children and get down on their level to create priceless grins and giggles…and how to safely handle and soothe babies into a deep sleep for their first portraits.

When you are a professional photographer, you never stop learning, and perfecting, and growing… it is a labor of love.   A labor of love that I am honored to do.  So when I hear how special my portrait photography makes my clients feel about themselves, it means the world to me!  To know that the countless hours I have poured into learning, perfecting, and becoming the best photographer I can be, has changed how a client feels about herself when she looks at her family portraits, I am truly touched!
